How do I adjust my flange?

The beauty of calligraphy is that every hand is different! This can making customized pens difficult to make because every writing style is different. If you find the default angle uncomfortable for your hand it's very easy to adjust! A set of small pliers are the most helpful when adjusting, just pull the arc of the flange wider to fit larger nibs, and squeeze it in to fit smaller nibs. See video for more assistance.

How Much does international shipping cost?

$14.50 (that's the bare minimum at the post office, so unfortunately even if you buy a $2 item the shipping will be that much. This is out of my control.)

I’m a beginner, what do you recommend?

I recommend carrot obliques for beginners. The short and fat carrot shape helps alleviate hand cramps, and trains you to have a light grip and light hand while writing. It also gives you more control because more of the pen is being held in your hand. Oblique's can seem odd to work with at first, but are easier overall because the flange puts the nib at the 50 degree slant needed for calligraphy, instead of having to turn your paper and perspective to that angle. As far as nibs go, any G nib is a good beginner nib or a thicker square-tipped nib like a Brause Steno. Add in some walnut ink - so easy to work with, and water-soluble - and some good 80# and up paper and you’re good to go! I also recommend working with some guides to keep your slants and ovals consistent.

What’s a carrot?

A carrot is a short 5" pen with a thicker grip. The thick grip helps alleviate hand cramping and works to train your hand to have a light grip and light pressure. It also maintains more control than other pens because more of the pen is being held in your hand.

Do the pens come with a nib?

Unfortunately no, and only because I can’t find bulk nibs anywhere! Check John Neal Bookseller, Amazon and Ebay for all your nib needs.

how do I clean my pen?

Good ol’ soap and water are your best friend. Since these pens aren’t made of wood you don’t have to worry about water damage. For stubborn inks and paint I use Windex - but be super careful when using India ink. That is some seriously permanent stuff and you may not be able to remove it completely. But keep in mind that while each pen is a work of art, it’s also meant to be an artist’s tool. Like a paintbrush or pencil.

My Pen looks different than the picture

Each pen is unique - we have almost no control over the marbling process, and so every pen is its own unique work of art!
